Uncle Sam's Hat

Materials Needed:

    215 Crystal 6mm faceted round beads
    72 Ruby 6mm faceted round beads
    72 Dark Sapphire 6mm faced round beads
    13 White 12" slim chenille stems
    40" Silver 24 gauge craft wire                    

Tools Needed:

Ruler
Wire Cutters
Long nose Pliers    

Step 1: Cut two 12" pieces of chenille as shown.

Step 2: String beads onto chenille according to diagram.
String 1- 3" piece of chenille with 5 crystal beads.
String 1- 4 1/2" piece of chenille with 12 crystal beads.
String 1- 7 1/2" piece of chenille with 18 crystal beads.
String 6- 9" or 12" pieces of chenille with 12 crystal and 12 Ruby beads.
String 3- 12" piece of chenille with 24 dark sapphire beads.
String 1- 12" piece of chenille with 30 crystal beads.
String 1- 12" piece of chenille with 36 crystal beads.
String 1- 12" piece of chenille with 42 crystal beads.

Step 3: Make 15 rings. center beads on chenille, then twist ends together tightly two or three times close to beads. Trim excess chenille to within 1/4" of beads. Bend chenille ends to inside of rings.

Step 4: Cut four 10" pieces of 24- gauge wire. Securely attatch one end of each of the four wires to the 5-bead ring Trim ends.
Step 5: Use wires to join the rings together to form a hat. For the top of the hat, wrap the four wires from the 5- bead ring around the 12- bead ring, then around the 18- bead ring, and finally around one of the 24- bead rings.

Step 6: Build the shaft of the hat by wrapping the wires evenly spaced around the remaining red and crystal rings, and sapphire rings as illustrated.
Step 7: Use the 30, 36, and 42- bead rings to finish the brim. Secure the last ring by wrapping the wire around twice. Trim wires and tuch ends in.
